- At last - it arrived today from Computability after a delayed delivery to them.
-
- As a long-time user of a 14.4 modem, the first evidence I saw that this was a bit faster than my old modem is
- that it supports 230K communication between modem and computer. Windows 95 installation didn't give any
- problems, although at first it told me that I had an 8250 UART driving my serial port. After a while it seemed
- to change its mind and flipped over to 16550.
-
- Early attempts to connect failed. I had to use the default setup string mentioned in the documentation before
- it would connect at all.
-
- The modem seems to connect quite happily at 28.8, but I haven't been able to try 33.6 yet because I don't have
- anything to connect to at that rate. Anybody in the northern Philadelphia area who has 33.6 modem and wants to
- try connecting - please let me know !
-
- The information about the FlashROM is covered in two pages of the manual. I was disappointed by such a
- peremptory coverage of what I considered a major selling point of the device. Despite the fact that none of
- the pre-sales documentation mention id, the Premier does support caller id.
-
- Worst thing found so far:
- The documentation does not give any indication of the best setup strings to use so I set up Windows 95 to use
- the factory defaults.
-
- Best thing found so far:
- Haven't had a single disconnect yet - something I usually got in the middle of PPP sessions with the office.
-
- Software:
- It comes with the usual bundle of products including QuickLink II, service provider disks and something called
- MessageConnect which I haven't played with yet.
-
- More later - I need to play some more first...
